The Longest Reign.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 NIV

Whether you are a Monarchist, Republican or just don't care, it's hard not be impressed by the person of our Queen. Having followed some of the media coverage, I have been reminded of 3 things which seem to have been central to her life. Faith, liberty and service.

As the Queen has got older it has become clearer that her faith in Christ as her Saviour has been the central rock on which her long reign has been based. It has sustained her in good and bad times and in recent years it has been good to see her give more public acknowledgment to her faith.

Liberty is perhaps not something you might easily associate with any monarchy. But this Queen seems to have known instinctively when she must change to reflect our time and culture and when continuity with the past should be maintained.

Along with faith and liberty we must add service as her greatest contribution to our public life. There has been a sacrificial element to this which I am sure is related to her faith in Christ.

Whatever your view of the monarchy there are things we can learn from this as Christians. We share a faith in a Saviour whose reign will last for ever and this provides us with a rock for our lives that should sustain us in bad times as in bad. Christ is the source of our liberty, not a liberty to do as we please, but a freedom to discover by his Spirit what Christ is calling us to do today in our time and our culture. To know when we must be more relevant and when we must hold onto the foundations of our faith.

Although perhaps unpopular today we too are called to sacrificial service and to recognise our need to change and grow in Christ. Embracing the possibility of change is a challenge for all of us, as W D Auden said  "We would rather be ruined than changed. We would rather die in our dread than climb the cross of the moment and let our illusions die."

Faith, Liberty and Service to these we are called.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. Isaiah 9:7 NIV
