Christmas and New Year Blog

John 1:9-10 NIV

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him.

This picture was taken at our recent Messy Christmas Christingle. I always love the moment when the lights are turned out and even very young children hold their lights so still and with such awe. It's as if in some way they have a better understanding than many of us as adults of the significant symbolism of the lighted candle representing JESUS the LIGHT of the WORLD.

In the 2,000 years since the birth of Jesus human beings have found ever more creative ways of refusing to recognise the light that is Christ Jesus. This ranges from warfare to religious intolerance to self obsession, to thinking that science will give us answers that mean we do not even have to consider God when actually it just leaves us more awestruck at the beauty of our universe. Even more recently I observe how even the important priority we give to relationships and family can be the very thing that we allow to distract us from the light of the world. To this we can now add celebrity culture and even Black Friday. This is not unique to our western culture, down through the ages and across every culture people have always found ways of refusing to recognise the Light.

John 1:4-5 NIV

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Yet Jesus is the Light of the World, there is nothing that can ultimately overcome that light, however dark things may seem in your life. To be honest 2014 has been a challenging year, like every year there have been moments of excitement and a sense of achievement, but there have also been moments of real sadness. But the Light that is Christ never goes out, nothing overcomes it and nothing ever will. During 2014 many friends at SBC have both laughed together, cried together and more recently had to work even harder together. To you all I say a Big Thank You.

But whether you worship with us or are just reading this blog because you found our website, my prayer for myself and you is that in 2015 you will keep your eyes on the Light that is Christ. Isn't it interesting that as we become ever more creative at finding ways of refusing to recognise the Light of the World, then the simple beauty of his being born as a baby, as one of us, somehow cuts through it all.

John 1:14 NIV

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
